More time needed to review applicants for Career Pathways Trust Fund

State officials are still reviewing applications for the $250 million California Career Pathways Trust Fund grants and won’t announce winners Friday, as had originally been anticipated.
Officials did not yet have a revised timeline for when the grant recipients will be named.
“These grants have attracted a great deal of interest and we’re still scheduling interviews with applicants,” said California Department of Education spokeswoman Pam Slater. “We are eager to announce the recipients, and that will take place as soon as possible.”
The education department received 123 eligible applications for a piece of the fund, a one-time grant program for partnerships between schools, community colleges and businesses to create programs that offer real-world work experience to students.
The applications totaled $709 million.
Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, who pushed for the creation of the grant program, has said the interest shows the need for more funding for job training programs for students. He has said he will work to secure additional money for the trust in this year’s budget.
